Perfume Product Photography for Illuminum London
Creating a Complete Visual System for a Twelve-Fragrance Collection
A coordinated content production for Illuminum London’s Core Range, combining ecommerce packshots, ingredient-led still lifes, creative campaign photography, short mood videos and a hero image presenting all twelve fragrances together.
Project Overview
Illuminum London is an independent British niche fragrance house founded in London in 2011. Its Core Range consists of twelve ungendered Eau de Parfum compositions, each developed around a distinct combination of raw materials and fragrance notes. For the brand’s relaunch, the project required more than a series of individual perfume photographs. The goal was to create a cohesive visual system that could introduce the complete collection, communicate the character of each scent and provide versatile assets for ecommerce, social media, advertising and print.

The Challenge
Making an Invisible Product Tangible
Perfume is an invisible product. Customers cannot experience its scent, development or texture through a screen, so the visual language must communicate qualities that would normally be discovered through smell.
The Core Range includes twelve individual fragrances, each with its own ingredients and mood, while the bottles share a consistent design. The photography therefore needed to create distinction between the scents without fragmenting the collection’s overall identity.
The content also had to fulfil several commercial purposes. Clean imagery was required for product pages, while more expressive visuals were needed for brand communication, campaigns and social media.
Project Objectives
The project focused on four goals:
Create a consistent visual identity for the complete Core Range.
Give every fragrance an individual mood while preserving collection unity.
Produce ecommerce-ready packshots and detailed product images.
Build a versatile content library for website, social media, advertising and print.
Photography Strategy
Creating One Visual System for Twelve Fragrances
The creative direction balanced consistency with individuality.
Recurring framing, lighting quality and product presentation connected the full collection. At the same time, ingredients, textures, surfaces and composition were adapted to reflect the personality of each fragrance.
This approach allowed the collection to feel recognisably Illuminum while giving every scent enough visual space to develop its own character.
Turning Fragrance Notes into Visual Language
Ingredient-led styling formed an important part of the project.
Materials associated with the fragrance compositions were arranged around the bottles to suggest scent families, contrasts and atmosphere. Flowers, fruit, spices, woods and mineral textures helped translate abstract fragrance notes into something customers could see and understand.
Rather than illustrating every ingredient literally, the styling focused on the overall impression of each scent: dark or luminous, delicate or intense, fresh or warm.
Ecommerce Packshots
Clean packshots were created for every fragrance in the collection.
The bottles were photographed against a neutral background with controlled lighting that preserved the transparency of the glass, the colour of the liquid and the clarity of the branding. Additional close-up images highlighted the cap, label, logo and packaging details.
These photographs provide a consistent foundation for product pages, online catalogues and ecommerce platforms.
Ingredient Compositions
Each fragrance was paired with a styled composition inspired by its defining notes.
The surrounding ingredients help customers interpret the scent before experiencing it physically. They also provide visual differentiation between products that share the same bottle design.
The resulting images combine useful product information with a more sensory form of storytelling, making them suitable for product pages, editorial content and social media.
Creative Perfume Photography
The creative photographs moved beyond straightforward product presentation.
Still life sets were developed around the mood and character of each fragrance, using carefully selected backgrounds, props and compositional elements. The bottle remained central, while the environment introduced emotion, depth and visual intrigue.
These images were created for campaign use, website banners, social media content and other placements where the brand needed to attract attention rather than simply document the product.
Collection Hero Image
A single hero composition brought all twelve fragrances together.
The image presents the Core Range as one connected collection while allowing the repetition and rhythm of the bottle design to become part of the composition.
It can be used across several formats, including website headers, collection pages, campaign banners, presentations and social media advertising.
Short Mood Videos
A short product video was produced for every fragrance.
Movement, changing light and close-up details added another layer to the visual identity of each scent. The videos were designed as concise atmospheric assets that could be used on product pages, social media, digital advertising and promotional campaigns.
Together with the still photography, they created a more complete and immersive presentation of the collection.
The Solution
The final content library included:
Ecommerce packshots for all twelve fragrances.
Close-up images of bottles, caps, labels and packaging.
Ingredient-based still life compositions.
Creative product photographs for campaigns and social media.
Short mood videos for every fragrance.
A hero group image featuring the complete Core Range.
High-resolution files for print and professional marketing use.
Web-optimised versions for ecommerce, advertising and social platforms.
All stages following the initial briefing were managed as one coordinated production, including concept development, prop sourcing, set styling, photography and professional retouching.
Results
The Project Outcome
The project gave Illuminum London a coherent visual library that could support the relaunch of the Core Range across multiple customer touchpoints.
Instead of producing separate content for every platform, the photography was planned as one connected system. Clean packshots support ecommerce requirements, ingredient compositions communicate fragrance notes, creative images strengthen the brand story, and short videos add movement to digital campaigns.
The result is a flexible collection of assets that presents the twelve fragrances consistently while preserving the individual identity of every scent.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
01
Why does perfume product photography require a specialised approach?
Perfume bottles often combine reflective glass, transparent materials, metallic details and liquid. Photographing these elements requires controlled lighting and careful retouching. The images must also communicate mood and scent character, not only the physical appearance of the bottle.
-
02
How can photography communicate a fragrance that customers cannot smell?
Ingredients, colour, texture, lighting and composition can suggest whether a fragrance feels fresh, floral, woody, smoky, delicate or intense. These visual cues help customers form an emotional and sensory impression before trying the perfume.
-
03
Should a fragrance brand use both packshots and creative images?
Yes. Packshots provide clarity and consistency for ecommerce, while creative photography builds atmosphere, distinction and emotional engagement. Both formats serve different stages of the customer journey.
-
04
Can one perfume photoshoot provide content for several platforms?
A carefully planned production can create assets for product pages, website banners, social media, advertising, newsletters, press materials and print at the same time. Planning the formats and crops before production improves the long-term usability of the content.
-
05
Why include ingredients in perfume photography?
Ingredient compositions make fragrance notes easier to understand and give each product a recognisable visual identity. They are especially useful when several fragrances share the same bottle and packaging design.
-
06
Are short product videos useful for fragrance brands?
Short videos introduce movement, light and atmosphere that cannot be fully expressed through still images. They can strengthen product pages, social media campaigns and digital advertising without requiring a full-scale commercial production.

It needs a visual language that helps customers distinguish between fragrances, understand their character and recognise the brand across every platform. A coordinated production can combine ecommerce packshots, creative still lifes, ingredient imagery and short-form video into one consistent content library built around the way the brand communicates and sells.
